Phil,
I'm just messin' with you :) As a fellow Linux user (although I would
still consider myself a newbie) and after having spoken with you over
the phone, I thought I could afford a little humor in my reply to your
post.
You're obviously a very knowledgeable guy, as is evident from the
details of your first post. And as a knowledgeable guy that has been
around the block a few times, you like things to be done your way, er ..
I mean the right way :) I'm very much the same, and have in fact
refused to use some tools for reasons as trivial as the inability to
adjust the font to a monospaced non-anti-aliased font, which is what I
prefer for code.
The intention with the packaging of Anthill has been to keep it as
simple as possible and yet provide some way to manage upgrades with the
least amount of pain. Distributing everything in one directory tree
satisfies these criteria, especially since the upgrade process is now as
simple as exploding the new Anthill OS version right over top of the
existing one.
Another complication that has made single directory tree deployment
beneficial is the fact that some folks like to have multiple instances
of Anthill OS running on the same box. Each instance is typically
configured with different projects, etc. Having a distribution self
contained within a directory tree makes this possible without too much
effort.
Where you choose to put the Anthill installation, whether it is
/usr/local/anthill as sugested by the installation doc, or
/usr/local/share/anthill as suggested in your email is entirely up to you.
To answer your original question though, Anthill needs to be able to
write to the "projects" and "publishDir" directories. But, Anthill also
assumes that the "conf" and "lib" directories are going to be siblings
of "projects" and "publishDir." Where ever you choose to put these four
directories, that is your Anthill root and Anthill needs to know about it.
I do value your input.
Regards,
