I think we've evolved to the point where advertising of one kind or 
another is the primary use of the list.  You might recall that I tried 
to foment a constructive discussion about this (after a Ruby conference 
promoter and an angry anti-spam recipient started shouting at each 
other) a few months back, but to little avail; I just got caught in a 
cross-fire (which is why I reply via private E-mail).

I myself think the various conference promotion E-mails are even less 
appropriate than the job ones, just because they are more clearly 
self-interested (and the people on the list have a less obvious 
self-interest in receiving them).  So I'd actually ban those first.

But if it were up to me, I'd ban 'em all.  I am sympathetic to the 
motivation behind the suggestion that a new list could be set up for 
this stuff, but I can imagine there are lots of other lists one could 
get on to do that.  (Or just call all the recruiters yourself.)  I 
signed up for the user group list to hear about the user group, not hear 
about whatever someone with an interest in reaching us might want us to 
hear about.
