We just hired somebody due to a Cleve-JUG job posting, and I think that
eliminating all job-postings would be extremely ill-advised.
Could there be separate "cleve-jug-jobs" dist-list? If you want to be
on it, then join it. If not, then don't join.
Career opportunities are, in my opinion, an integral part of any Java
Users Group. It also is an indication of the economic vibrancy of the
area. If we are trying to tell people that there are no Java careers in
Northeast Ohio, then banning all job postings would be a great idea.

Hey Maciej (and all),
The Cleveland WebSphere User Group receives the same kind of
solicitations for job postings. And rather than sending the
solicitations on to the group via email thus forcing the group to weed
through the mails, we created a free site for the solicitors to post
their job openings.
The site is really simple and anyone can use the RSS syndication feeds
to see what has been posted recently (we also include Salary Guides,
Resume help, etc.).
The Java group is more than welcome to use the site to curb the
unsolicited email as well as provide a career resource for the Java
Group.
If you would like more info on providing those that wish to post jobs on
the site, just shoot me an email.
To view the WebSphere and Java Career Resource site, go to

Maciej:
I think we've evolved to the point where advertising of one kind or
another is the primary use of the list. You might recall that I tried
to foment a constructive discussion about this (after a Ruby conference
promoter and an angry anti-spam recipient started shouting at each
other) a few months back, but to little avail; I just got caught in a
cross-fire (which is why I reply via private E-mail).
I myself think the various conference promotion E-mails are even less
appropriate than the job ones, just because they are more clearly
self-interested (and the people on the list have a less obvious
self-interest in receiving them). So I'd actually ban those first.
But if it were up to me, I'd ban 'em all. I am sympathetic to the
motivation behind the suggestion that a new list could be set up for
this stuff, but I can imagine there are lots of other lists one could
get on to do that. (Or just call all the recruiters yourself.) I
signed up for the user group list to hear about the user group, not hear
about whatever someone with an interest in reaching us might want us to
hear about.
